① Good stability of thermal oxidation. This is especially true for lubricants used in high-efficiency internal combustion engines that produce high temperatures, as well as for gear oils, hydraulic oils and general lubricants. According to experience, the oxidation rate of lubricating oil will double for every 10 degrees Celsius increase in temperature.



② Low volatility. Low volatility of base oil is required to prolong the service life of lubricating oil and ensure that the quality of lubricating oil does not change significantly during service. Environmental protection also limits the volatility of base oils. Therefore, the volatility of base oil is required to be further reduced.



③ High viscosity index. The requirements for lubricants to function fully over a wide range of temperatures while maintaining a roughly constant viscosity have increased and will continue to do so. The best way to achieve this requirement is to use a high viscosity index base oil instead of relying on viscosity index improvers, because the viscosity index improvers will make the oxidation stability of lubricating oil worse and form deposits.



④ Low sulfur or no sulfur. Sulfur in mineral base oils is a natural extreme pressure additive and antioxidant, but sulfur can interact with additive compounds and make it difficult to optimize additive formulations. In addition, sulfur has a negative effect on the removal of nitrogen oxides by catalytic converter, so it is not desirable to contain sulfur in the base oil.



(5) Low viscosity. Reducing viscosity helps improve internal combustion engine efficiency. In addition, it is necessary to reduce viscosity when lubricating oil is required to have better fluidity at low temperature.



⑥ Environment friendly. The precondition for the continued use of petroleum base oils in the 21st century is to further reduce the content of aromatic hydrocarbons, especially polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and also to ensure that the processing or recycling of base oils will not cause special problems affecting human health.
